APA Style Essay
Tips for Creating an APA Style Essay
APA is stated as American Psychological Association. This kind of writing is mainly used in the social science disciplines. If you have any knowledge of MLA writing technique, then your understanding of the APA Style Essay writing will be quicker. This is because APA is formatted like MLA and shows quite a number of similarities.
There are various disciplines that require the usage of the APA writing style like in biology essays. The important thing to note is that this kind of essay is somewhat structured and thus its format must always be adhered to for the content of the essay writing to be considered. Custom-Writing.co.uk provides a very detailed structure of the APA style format in case you need to review it before getting down to the actual writing.
APA uses in-text citations (parenthesis) within the sentences. These citations include the author's name and the date of publication. Rules for these citations are as follows:
In case the name of the author is mentioned in the sentence, place the date of publication in parentheses after the name.
In cases where the name is not mentioned, just include the author's name and the date in parentheses at the end of the source material.
If you use a direct quote, place the page number after the publication date within the parentheses.
Let’s analyze the example while pointing out the format of APA Style Essay writing:
"Michael Kobbil (1985) presented a proposal to the government and persuaded them to provide tax incentives. All of his interviews were referred to as ‘fully focused on the welfare of the people’ (Sunday Times, 1986). In his proposal (Allow us to breathe) The government established regulations for charitable giving in the Income Tax Cap (Allow us to breathe, 1985, p.74)."
The example begins to paraphrase an author (Michael Kobbil) who is named in the sentence. It then lists a direct quote from what the author wrote (that is, includes the page numbers) but also does not identify the author within the sentence. If the author was identified within the sentence, his name would be followed by the year of publication and then only the page number would be in the parentheses (at the end of the quote).
An APA Style Essay also contains a bibliographic page which is called the Reference page. It has the following structure:
First come the initials of the first name of the author instead of the complete name.
What follows immediately is the publication date in parentheses.
Titles of the articles are not marked with quotation marks (instead titles of magazines, journals, books, etc are still underlined).
The lists also are alphabetized by the last name of the author (or the title in case the author is absent).
The first line is flushed left while subsequent lines in the same entry are indented in (roughly 5 spaces or one touch of the tab button).
In cases of reference from magazines or journals, volume number and publication title are both underlined, followed by the issue number (which is not underlined) in parenthesis. Just use a p. or a pp. to note page numbers with newspapers. Other times you would use a p. would be to indicate what pages an article is on.
Remember, an APA Style Essay is not as complex as it may sound. With accuracy and focus on understanding the requirements for such essays you will be able to compose a brilliant essay.
