How to Finish a Dissertation if You Hate It with Every Fiber of Your Being
One of our customers sent us this message:
“Guys, I need to confess. I really hate my dissertation. There are days when I open the instructions on my laptop and I feel a lump in my throat. I just want to start crying because anxiety and depression about my project make me crazy. It makes me want to throw my laptop out of the window and become a street cleaner.”
We are here to assist and support, therefore we have written this article to help you calm down and keep writing. Hopefully, it will help you as you work on a difficult and long-lasting project, like thesis or dissertation, or even a book.
- You are not alone
Every student has felt anxiety about the final project. And most of them have felt an unbearable desire to quit. Feeling hopeless and hating your dissertation is absolutely normal. Of course, knowing that other people are suffering just like you cannot make your frustration less, but this gives you a sense that difficulties are normal and someday they will go away.
- Do at least something
It is still better than doing nothing! No matter what you have done – a small sentence or an entire page, as long as you do it every day, you keep moving. Even if you edited a couple of pages, added a citation, or written two words – it’s okay, you have done something, and you can continue.
- It doesn’t have to be perfect
A good dissertation is a finished one. When you get stuck in wording, phrasing, or trying to compose a single paragraph for an hour, willing to make everything perfect, you are just wasting your time. Move on and write more. You will fix it later.
- It’s not a competition
Remember that you are not competing with anyone and it’s not a sprint race. It is a marathon, and you need to work every day at least an hour or two to make progress. You want to win and step on the ‘finish line’ as fast as possible, but your degree is not a prize. It is your goal, and it’s better to slow down, work a little bit every single day, and approach to the end.
- Don’t talk – write
Like many desperate students, you spend too much time talking about how difficult your project is, and how much problems you have to encounter. Telling everyone that you are working on a dissertation and experience difficulties means nothing and doesn’t makes the results better. So complain less and work more!
