To prevent further migration including skilled labor and to prevent devaluation of its currency, they had no other alternative but to build a wall closing all open entry points between East and West Germany. It was built all of a sudden and came down equally fast. The communist bloc lost its control, and people decided it was time to bridge the gap between the two countries. East Germans were finding ways to move across other exit points including Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. On Nov. 09, 1989, a formal announcement by an East German government official brought relief to its countrymen. The Berlin Wall was finally brought down.
