Essay Editor – How TO Become One

An essay editor has a very important role to play in ensuring that an academic project is submitted without any errors. The role of an editor is well defined. However, many writers acquire the skills needed to edit an essay. It involves checking content for grammar, sentence structure, topic relevance, verifying reference sources and compliance with formatting standards. The essay structure has to comply with the format accepted by an institution. GCSE English coursework would be a well thought out academic exercise without errors in punctuation or logic. A sentence can be drafted using simple language that conveys a precise message to readers. It is only possible if the writer is aware of how to manipulate language skills. It does take a long time to acquire the skills needed to edit an essay. The more time writers spend in proofreading and editing assignments, the better they would get at fulfilling the role of an essay editor.

Importance Of An Editor

Writers have a definite role to play in compiling an essay. They conceive ideas and elaborate on them using research content. The thought process is focused on providing valuable content that is needed to compile a good essay. Unfortunately, other aspects of the essay are neglected. It is not uncommon to see writers spend hours gathering content and then neglect the basics of essay writing. Some find it difficult to form the correct structure, while others simply leave checking grammar to the auto spell check function of a word processor. Nothing can be further from the truth that a good writer is also a good editor. The role of an editor is very specialized. They have an analytical frame of mind that can detect content errors that average writers may not comprehend. Consider an exercise in statistics coursework. Statisticians follow a fixed path in finding unique answers to statistical problems. If an answer is incorrect, an analysis of the process, step by step, would reveal the logical answer. The same principle needs to be applied during the editing process.

Some Practical Methods To Adapt

1.       Repeat the editing process several times following a check list till experience is gained. For example, the exercise can begin with checking an essay for relevance. Each argument would be checked in context to the essay statement. Editors would be able to find relevant content at great speed and make corrections in the essay without disturbing the order of relevance. It is a discreet process that manipulates content in a way that enhances the presentation.

2.       Become an expert by reading about a topic. For example, business studies coursework is based on a process or business plan concerning a definite business activity. Unless editors are well versed with the topic, it would be impossible for them to understand the context in which it is to be used.

3.       An essay editor uses a definite pattern to edit. The steps are well outlined and encourage working at great speed. In other words, editors use norms in the order that has worked for them. The final output has to be free of error and to the point.
